Starting in middle school, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19, I became subject to numerous different racist comments and microaggressions. From being called a bat-eater to being told to go back to where I “came from”, I started to realize how vulnerable and unsafe Asians can feel, especially during COVID times. After this, the issue of Asian hate crimes and targeting really started to resonate with me, and upset me more as it kept happening.
I started to worry about people in my community staying safe from these hate crimes, specifically my grandmother, living in San Francisco where hate crimes have become surprisingly prevalent. Especially since she is more vulnerable to these attacks as an elder, it is so important for people like her to learn how to defend themselves and feel safe to live life without fear of getting attacked for their race. I feel that the mission of the Asian Defense Alliance is so important and can end up helping so many people, especially youth and elderly defend themselves, feeling safe from and ready for any situation.
